Down Goes Gill

Well another week of down after a week of up. After Fight Gone Bad I went in on Monday to work on snatches. I knew after a while that it was not good for the back. I felt I was getting good form down and then one bad one and my back told me no more. I listened, but it was too late. Monday night was a bad night with little sleep so I called in sick at work and got a doctor's appointment the next day. I told the doctor what was happening and that I had been going to a chiropractor ( I knew he wouldn't like that). I was surprised that he said that chiropractic works about 50/50. The doctor told me that he wanted me to go to PT for a couple of weeks. He also told me no Crossift for 2 to 4 weeks. He stated that I may never be able to do some of the movements. He doesn't even know what Crossfit was. The only reason I went to the Dr. in the first place is to see if I can get rid of the pain so I can get better at Crossfit. I decided even before I went in I would not stop Crossift, I would just have to deal with pain if it came to that. He did however prescribe some pain stuff, muscle relaxer, and anti-inflammatory.

I went to PT the next day. The guy seemed to know what he was doing. He did a few physical tests with me and there were some tests that I couldn't perform at all with my left leg. It was weird to watch, but comforting to know where to start. There was also a test that showed my lower traps were weak. He pointed out that the lower traps are related to the rest of my core and that I need to work on my core (as soon as he said it I heard Joe scream "TIGHTEN UP THOSE ABS"). So he gave me a list of exercises to do. I go back tomorrow. After doing one session we did one of the tests again and he showed me I could do it after the exercises. When I asked him about Crossift he told me he wasn't going to say no, but (I think for legal purposes) a Dr is above the therapist. He did suggest I avoid anything that would be overhead because this would load the spine. He also stated he would be curious to see how Crossfit would work with my rehab.

I think I will take 1 week off (doing only the exercises that the PT tells me). Today my back felt better that it has in a long time so I hope I am making the right move. After this week I will talk with Ricky and Joe to see what we want to do from there. I feel that one step back would be worth it if it helps me to move forward on my course with Crossfit. I know I will continue with Crossfit, but my goal is to do it pain free. It sucks that I start hurting after I started making moves to get healthy.

Jim,
Hey it's me Ricky posting here. I am happy to hear that you are taking the necessary steps to help correct what is wrong. The therapist sounds smart and will get you to where you need to be. I know that you understand that CrossFit is very healthy if and only when it is performed correctly at all times. The week off will help you tremendously and I look forward to your return. Follow the movements that the PT has prescribed for you from here on out and especially before every CrossFit workout as it will help you. I would love to be able to help out with the core stuff as I know a lot about what the PT is talking about but it is not within my scope as I take it from where he leaves it. I really enjoy your company and hope that you will stay with us for as long as God allows you to roam this earth. Your statement of taking one step back in order to jump forward is spot on. Sometimes when in the atmosphere of CrossFit it is hard to swallow not being able to go prescribed or not being able to make the time limit but those things aren't or shouldn't be as important as moving in order to rid the body of inflammation not cause it. You'll get to where you want to be but it will just take a little longer. Keep your head up and fighting the good fight. You have an awesome family and Joe and I really enjoy having him come and support you and everyone else at the functions we hold.

Two more things, obviously at the end of my first post I meant them not him when referring to your family (typing too fast I guess) and second, if you don't mind I am going to post the video of you doing the third round of FGB onto the blog for everyone to see as well as post a link to your personal blog. I think everyone should get a read into what an awesome journey you have begun, how far you have come, and where you go from here on out.

Jim,
My wife and I just saw your video on the CFO website. I've only been Cros Fitting for 7 months and recently did FGB for the first time. We scaled it slightly and did not keep score(I wish I would have). It's funny dude it seems that every time I do a tough work out there's always a tougher one. I hope to god there is not one tougher than this work out. I did the work out at the fire station with a couple co- workers that once in a blue moon will cross fit with me. The first thing they said was is this going to be enough weight on the bars. It definately proved to be enough if not too much.
I put your Website to my favorites list and mywife and I are pulling for you and excited to watch your progress. Dude I think you'll agree with me when I say that this program is insane. I've never been into working out at all because I've always been self consious of not being able to lift as much as everybody else. But dude it's crazy I'm addicted now my wife thinks I'm a freak and the results are unbelievable. I hope the PT gets your back, back in gear there's nothing worse than back pain. Alright dude talk to you later..
